In the 2015-2016 school year, a single-parent mom sent her son to a predominantly black student school. It was important to her that he was around people that looked like him.
When walking into the school one day; a banner was there advertising enrollment for a 3rd and 4th-grade brown girl mentoring program.
The mother was very excited to see young girls getting the support they needed.
She said to her son excitingly, “go down the hall that way and I will go this way and let us find the banner for the boys”.
She walked back to where her son was, and he looked up at her disappointedly.
He did not see a program for boys, and neither did she. He asked his mother “Why there was nothing for the boys?" and she had no answer. He was hurt and so was she.
Advocating for boys, she went to the office, demanding an explanation on where the mentoring program was for boys.
They provided no answers or solutions.
What she realized at that moment, and what her son learned that day, was that he was different. He noticed he was not acknowledged.
He recognized he did not have a group supporting him.
His mother knew that her job as a parent had just gotten a little more challenging.
She was then faced with questions like,” mom, why they don’t do stuff for boys?” He started seeing increasing that the resources for boys/men were either none or very very little, yet there were programs for girls.
The mom began looking for a mentoring program for an 8- year male, the list was very short. Programs then started at age 13 and 14 for boys of color. She knew as a single parent of an 8-year-old boy she needed immediate help.
In 2016, with collaboration and support from parents and the community 4 Your Young Kings (42YK) was organized
as an afterschool mentoring program.
In 2022, 4 Your Young Kings will offer a Virtual mentorship program for boys and young men of color.
42YK provides a mentoring network that ensures the creation of a safe place to have opportunities to exchange
healthy communication on racial inequities that bring enlightenment and education; while disturbing how one reacts to racial inequalities and systemic cultural biases.
Our organization services boys 8 to 18, and their success is powered by the support from our community. Our community is full of people who have positively influenced and made differences in the community. With the community’s help, exposure to new things, and a re-introduction to what they have forgotten; the road to growth and development is created.
It is important that credit is given to those who have earned it. Men Holding Strong is about acknowledging the men who have, lead the way, paved the way, that maintained the way for other boys and young men to continue their journey into healthy manhood
Working together builds hope for the next generation. It gives structure and confidence to those who seek guidance. Many of our young men need direction. We need you to make a positive impact.
